I was driving around 90mph and the tack. Just stopped and went down. I tried to rev it up and it started to go up again, but then just dropped. What happened? It gets fuel, spark, charge, it is a fuel injected car. The ecu only has the single flast when it is turned on, but nothing after that. HELP!! Thanks,
Ken:confused:

First of all, what were you doing driving 90MPH? You could have possibly done something to the engine. This is, after all, an 18 year old car with a small engine. Would you expect your grandpa to be able to run a marathon and not drop dead from the exertion?

... am I actually reading this? It's not advice, it's a lecture. You haven't given the OP any information whatsoever. Please stop pretending to give advice to people when you don't have an idea as to what they're talking about.

To lostinmiself: is the only problem that the tachometer went dead or are there other issues with the car? Is it still running and driving fine?

He said his car died. I don't think it's running fine.

It turns over, it gets spark, fuel, and air. It just will not actually start. I have no idea why it died, and I was going down the pass between seattle and spokane.

I've been on that road. It's amazing that you didn't crash. Everyone speeds on that road.

If you can't get it started and you have spark, fuel and air, then something obviously got blown during your high speed ride. Would suggest that you have your alternator checked as well as the cylinders. Something in your car just could not take the high speed.

Omg, if I have to read one more post from you like this, I'm going to scream. An alternator does not start your car. If the alternator went bad, the car wouldn't stall out immediately; the battery light would come on because it wasn't charging anymore.

Lostinmiself: did you hear any noise(s) when the vehicle stalled out? You may want to have a compression test done to make sure there's nothing wrong internally.

I cand do a compresstin test I don't hve the right tools for the job. And no noise was emitted, it just sort of stopped working. I am going to check the o2 sensor to see if it went bad, and the catylic converter to see if it is cloged with 18 years of soot...

If the O2 sensor was bad, that still wouldn't make the vehicle stall out. If the converter was plugged, you would have noticed something a loooong time ago.

So what do I do? Is therte something I can plug into the ecu to tell me what's wrong?

OMG if I hear one more stupid answer of yours on the law board I'll throw up. You know zip about law. I do know something about cars. I do know something about law having worked in attorney's offices for over 15 years. Your snide comments are not needed here. Please stick to the topic and stop attacking other members.

Read this article about alternators.

Just what is an Alternator?? (http://www.misterfixit.com/alterntr.htm)

Your alternator is what keeps your car running as it provides all the necessary electric power to run everything in the car, fuel pump, etc. I think the bearings just went and it died. If everything turns over, then it's not the starter or battery, but the alternator.

Well, that is just the pot calling the kettle black if I ever saw it. Seeing as I "know zip about law" you'd better tell JudyKayTee and excon because they seem to be agreeing with me lately. And please, stick to cars & trucks because that's the topic we're currently in.

As for your unnecessary alternator link, all it says is that it keeps the battery charged when the car is running. That's true. It doesn't, however, have anything to do with starting the car. Go ask CaptainRich or txgreasemonkey if you don't believe me, which you obviously don't.

You can try a scan tool but that will only tell you if there are codes stored in the computer. If this actually is due to internal damage, the scanner probably won't help.
