View Full Version : I have mirena. But I think I'm pregnant

So I have had mirena for about 6 months now. I have a 8 month old daughter and my husband is getting ready to deploy for a year to Iraq. So that's a big reason why I got the Mirena. It would just be really hard right now if I was pregnant. Anyway.. I have been feeling the same way I did in the first trimester with my daughter. So I am really nervous! But scared to take a test!
I am going to suck it up and take one this weekend. But my main concern is that if I AM pregnant... what are the risks. Ive heard that mirena can cause the child your carring to be fertile. That removing the IUD can cause an abortion. If its an ectopic pregnancy.. well the list is never ending... I was just trying to research to look further into the risks so that my husband and I can make the right decisions with this if I am pregnant. If I am I of course want to continue the pregnancy! I think itd be a sign from God that I was truly suppose to be pregnant.. given the circumstances. I just want to know what to expect you know.

If you are pregnant, the IUD will just be removed. There is a small chance of a miscarriage, but obviously you don't want it to remain in place, and they will check to rule out an ectopic. There can be a potential risk for your future fertility, not the baby's with its use, but that is really if you happen to develop infections with its use, or have other problems while using it.

You know I am worried about the same thing... They never tell you this crap when you get the thing inserted its all its 99.99 percent effective... well that little .01 percent never crosses your mind. I never got a period with mirena so I never thought to look for one, and I just had a baby. He is seven months old. I would want to keep it if I am pregnant I just thought that the whole point in getting it was to prevent me from peeing on a stick. I would love to know your results, and good luck.

I'm on the same boat. I got the 5 Year IUD because I have 2 boys and I thought that was enough stress on my body since I have back problems. I haven't gotten my period since my hubby got back from Iraq last September but lately I have been feeling so tiered and my boobs are hurting. I spotted a little last week but only when I wiped but it was a very light pink. I took a pregnancy test 2 days ago and it came out negative. I'm still worried... should I go get a blood test done?

I too had a mirena and was just certain I was pregnant. I totally felt pregnant and had all the symptoms I had with my two sons. Took a test, negative. So I went to the dr. they said that everything I was feeling is side affects of the iud. Even if they don't show up for quite some time after you've had it. If you are still worried go to the dr. but the likely hood of you being pregnant is slim to none and the iud can cause pms symptoms which are very similar to pregnancy symptoms.

I also have a mirena IUD and am worried that I may be pregnant. I'm producing milk again my boobs hurt. I have been peeing a lot I'm sick in the morning and I have had weird discharge my sex drive is off the wall and my mood swings are a sight to behold. I'm worried but I keep reading that home pregnancy tests may give false negatives. Any body have any suggestions. I would go to the doctor but I don't currently have insurance so can anybody give me some info I'm really worried.

I found this site cause I was concerned I was pregnant. I have had mirena since July. I feel sick. I also think I might be pregnant. I have 2 boys a 23 month old and a 8 month old. I sure hope I'm not pregnant can't really afford another one. I'm scared to go take the test. Well can't really afford a test either. I was telling my husband that there are other people thinking they are and their test were negative then I scrolled down and the next comment I read was the lady saying she is pregnant.

I have been on the mirena for 4 yrs now. I have a 4 yrd old son and I think I may be pregnant. I have missed my period and I am usually right on schedule its been two months now and still nothing. My sex drive is crazy off the wall and the doctor said when I called that I can't get prregnant on it. What should I do? I don't have a lot of money and I have been hearing that when you take home tests while on the mirena they come up negative.

Smart to make the appointment. Pregnancy does sometimes happen if the IUD slips. Hope it turns out how you would like it to!

I have had my mirena for a little over a year and lately I have been getting really sharp stabbing pains in my right ovary area and when I moved I swear it feels like something is in there, like when my son was growing inside of me, and my appetite is crazy lately, I'm super stressed and moody and I've had no energy which is weird because I take 2 different prescriptions that are suppose to give me energy. Im afraid I could be pregnant. I haven't had a real period since I got mirena and then back in July I had a heavy period for about a week and a couple of days and that's it, nothing since then. Im going totake a HPT, but I'm scared if its positive, but then again what do I do if it's negative because these symptoms and feelings are making me nervous.

I personally have mirena and my expiration is Jan or fen of 2011. When I researched the symptoms a lot of the side effects are that of being pregnant: tender breasts, weight gain (out of no where), mood swings, acne, and on and on. I had mine checked for placement and the doctor said it was in position perfectly as though as it was when it was first inserted. I started spotting which has happened before but this time it is a lot more than just wiping and blood being visible. It's obviously old blood because its almost brown but has lasted more than a day. (typically is only when I wipe a few times then it's gone) so I'm worried since I only have a few more months left before I have it replaced is there a possibility I could be pregnant? If I were I wouldn't mind BUT my concerns are the effects to the baby and myself if I were. My body ha a hard time with pregnancy thus being stated I couldn't have children (which I have one) and I had a lot of pregnancy issues being considered "high risk." what should I do?

Try a pregnancy test, or have your doctor do one in office. If you are pregnant, although not common, your doctor will determine whether it would be better to remove it now, remove it a bit later, or let it remain.
Since side effects can be similar, and your doctor has said it is properly located, odds are you are not pregnant and it is simply from the IUD. Wise to check for the peace of mind however.

I have the mirena and I think I was pregnant when I got it inserted isn't there hormons or something in it that keeps you from getting pregnant also that could affect your pregnancy test results? What kind of pregnancy test should I use?

THe IUD is usually pretty effective, but no form of birth control is 100% effective. If you think you might be pregnant, best would be to go to your doctor and test there. IF you were indeed pregnant, they would determine whether it should be removed right away... which usually is the case, should it be removed a little later, or would it be better left in place... happens, but not the norm.
The hormones associated with the IUD would not effect a pregnancy test. If you wanted to try one at home first look for one that will give a read out of "pregnant" or not "pregnant" (they tend to be the easiest to read the results) and be sure you follow the directions exactly.
Even if it is negative, if you still think pregnancy is a possibility, see your doctor to confirm one way or the other.

I got my Mirena IUD put in in July and my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex this past week because we both made sure we were safe and also thought I couldn't get pregnant with the Mirena, but I went to feel for it and I can't find it anywhere and I have been so tired and I have been experiencing so much nausa. My last period was Sept. 31, 2010 is it too soon to know if I am pregnant or not? I took a pregnancy test and it said negative. But my boyfriend said I should wait like two more weeks to take another one? If I wait two more weeks and I AM pregnant will the IUD effect my pregnancy?

Odds are you aren't pregnant, although an IUD can slip out of place and result in pregnancy, it is not the norm. Because you can't find it doesn't mean it is out of place however. Best to go to your gyn and have them retrieve the string for you.
If you just had sex this passed week since having the IUD inserted, and if your boyfriend used additional protection? odds of pregnancy are very slim. It would be too early to know if you are pregnant as well.
If you wait a couple of weeks to test, you should get accurate results. IF you did happen to become pregnant, whether the IUD is taken out would depend on your doctor and the IUD. Most often they are removed when a pregnancy is confirmed. Sometimes they wait several weeks, and in much less common situations the IUD is left in if there is more risk perceived at trying to remove it.

I am 18 and I got mirena so that I could protect myself from getting pregnant and I could go to college without worrying about being pregnant. I am really worried though that I might be pregnant because I have beeen feeling light headed, sick to my stomach, boobs are getting bigger and are really sore, backaches. I just feel that I am pregnant and I'm scared to get a pregnancy test for the fear of the out come. Also if I am pregnant I am really worried about my health and the babies.

I know it can be frightening to consider being pregnant when you don't have plans for that right now, but the only way you will know for certain is to test. It is not common with an IUD in place, but it can happen as no form of birth control will be 100% effective. Sooner or later, some women will become pregnant.
Since you are concerned about the health of a possible baby and yourself, it would be wise to either take a test at home, making sure that you follow the directions carefully, or see your doctor. You may also be able to get one at the health clinic at your school. If you are pregnant, your doctor would most likely want to remove the IUD. This would need to be done by your doctor, hence the need for testing.
For the peace of mind, try a test.

Hi Numberonemom:
Generally the IUD is all the protection most women who have one will use. Pregnancy is possible, although not common. If you think pregnancy might be a possibility, try a pregnancy test.

I've been suspecting pregnancy for about a week or so now, with each day becoming more-so. I got the mirena in precisely 101 days ago.
First sign I have is the tender breasts, sore nipples and roundness of them. Recently I've noticed my nipples looking different, although I can't figure out why. I have never, ever, had breast tenderness etc before, so this was alarming.
Also, I have an unsettled "acidic" or "sour" hungry feeling. I feel like I could just eat and eat. I may be temporarily relieve, but then I feel hungry with the acid feeling again.
Fatigue - which may or may not be related to having a busy schedule.
Constipation.
Headaches (some more severe, some mild)
Really thirsty.
It is hard to make a prompt appointment here because I am stationed with my husband in The Netherlands. It's a huge process to get an appointment, which I'm working on. In the mean time, any input or stories of your own would be great.
I did take a negative pregnancy test, but then again, I know other woman who also did with the IUD and had a baby. Regardless, this IUD is coming out.

If you don't have insurance and need to get tested you can go to the Health Department. The provide medical services and it is based on your income. That is what I am going to do. I have had a lot of pregnancy symptoms and my tummy is blowing up. I haven't gained any weight but it looks like I am very pregnant. I have had the Mirena for about 2 months and am having all the pregnancy symptoms. I am scared to death, we are doing good to take care of the little boy that we have now and both my husband and I work full time outside the home.

To "lovemy2boys" , I have also had the mirena in for 3 years, 3.5 actually.. and I am worried I might be pregnant. I took a test, even though the "unprotected" sex (although the mirena is supposed to be the protection) took place just a week ago. I have another test so, I plan to wait at least another week or longer before I take the second test. My question is though, have you had your period the whole 3 yrs or no? I have not had my period the entire time I've had the mirena in and I just don't see how I could possibly get pregnant but Im definitely having the same "feeling" I had when I was pregnant with my daughter 4 yrs ago..
