How long can an immigrant with Valid Permanent Green Card/Residence Permit and a valid foreign Passport stay outside of USA without Re-Entry Permit and without affecting his/her Residency, Naturalization or US Citizenship?

If you need to go for longer 6 months, it's recommended to file re-entry permit (I-131) and get an approval before you leave.

On this same subject, I am a green card holder that has completed the 5 years required US residence period. I am now able to apply for US Citizenship but am now currently working abroad for the Department of Defence. Do I still need to fill out my I-131? Does a different rule apply in this case?
