How can I really and truly remove Yahoo messenger. Previous answers to this site to a similar question don't work! When I try to uninstall Yahoo Messenger I get a window that states "could not open INSTALL.LOG file". Googling gets a lot of free downloads that supposedly will uninstall Messenger until you get to the registration portion where you have to buy their product. If you don't, the "FREE" download does nothing. I'm running Vista home version. Any help would really be appreciated, thank you.

Find the installation directory. Probably under Program files on your c: drive. Move the install.log file to your desktop. Go through the uninstall procedure. It should ask you to locate the install.log file. Browse to the file on your desktop. The program "should" uninstall now. This has worked several times for me.

Hope this helps.

First, you can try this:
Control/alt/delete to see if Yahoo msgr is running under the process tab (end its process if it is). Then:
Back up your registry/create a restore point (don't skip this step). Then:

Start/run/browse/find C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\unwise.exe (or the proper path to unwise.exe)/click unwise.exe, and it will appear in the run box/go to the end of the path, put a space, and type 'install.log'/it will look like:
"C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\unwise.exe" install.log/click 'ok'

It should be uninstalled after that. However, if you have also downloaded the other parts that come with the messenger, then some may still be on your system. Post back here. And if things go wrong, go back to your saved restore point.

The actual command path is found in the registry here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall
\Yahoo! Messenger\UninstallString

With the command:
C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\MESSEN~1\UNWISE.EXE /U C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!
\MESSEN~1\INSTALL.LOG

Thanks for the help. I went into my F drive where Messenger was actually located for some strange reason and was able to uninstall it there.
