Ok, here goes. I lived in Alberta, and I took out an unsecured loan for my girlfriend at the time from Wells Fargo for $7900 in Sept 2005. She told me that she would make the payments and she did. I found out later that it was only until Dec 2005. Someone called me in July 2008 and notified me of this collection. I have now moved to Egypt and will be here until 2011. A collections agent called my mother and told her that he is from the legal department at Credit Bureau of Canada Collections and that I need to call him. Before I do I need to ask:

Should I call him? What is going to happen? How long can they come after me? Can they issue an arrest warrant when I go back to canada to visit if they sue me? Can they sue me?

Anyhelp would be great.

Credit Bureau of Canada, although sounding quite official, has no ties to the government of Canada but does have a website. No they can't issue an arrest warrant for you, even if they have a judgment against you for the money which only enables them to collect in court. And from the sound of it, it hasn't gone this far yet. These are just the first harassing calls collection agencies make when they have been hired by the creditor, in this case Wells Fargo.

No, I wouldn't call them from Egypt. Your mother should inform him that you have left the country, and if they harrass your mother, I would file charges.

They can do absolutely nothing without a judgment against you and I can tell you in Ontario, and I hope in other Provinces, that is extremely hard to do.
