View Full Version : HELP: Going from Black Hair to Brown Hair

Ok, firstly, Id like to apologies as I realise there are many topics on this forum about this, however, they have only confused me more, as some say that it is not possible to do it without bleaching, and some say that there are hair dye removal products that can do it.
I naturally have dark brown hair. I then dyed my hair a tinted red colour which looked pretty cool. I then decided to dye it black (permanent) nearly 2 months ago, which I got bored of quickly (was meant to be a blue black, but the blue quickly went).
I want to dye my hair again back to brown. Is there any way of doing? I really would prefer to do it myself rather than go to a salon.
Any advice given will be greatly appreciated.

Well getting rid of black hair is always the hardest as it's the darkest shade you could have.
I have had black hair, red hair, light brown.. name it I've had it :)
All I can suggest as you don't want to go to the hairdresser, is buy colour hair dye, start with maybe a dark brown then in a few months do it again buy light brown.
Hope it works.

I believe it is a product that removes all hair dyes from hair (leaving it a brassy colour apparently), I have only just heard of it by looking on this forum.

Best person to ask is Prettynpetite1 - she is our hair & beauty expert - she will know what to do and how best to go about dying your hair from black o Brown. May I suggest you browse the hair & Beauty section - you may find the answer there as I am sure it has been asked before!

I recommend that you use a hair color remover. You can use Loreal Color Zap or Loreal Effasol Color Remover. They are designed to wash away permanent hair color, leaving hair ready for re-coloring. It is very hard to get out black dye completely. You will need to use 2 or more applications to remove all the dye from the hair. You may also have to use bleach to lighten your hair. Keep in mind that hair color removers or bleach can make your hair look raw and brassy, and you will need to re-color it. So when you're done stripping the color, you can apply the hair color you want.

The other day I went into the hairdressers and they addvised me not 2 strip my hair as it could ruin it because I dyed my hair black and I now hate it because its boring so what they told me to do is highlight it they said I may have 2 ddo it a couple of imes before it goes the colou I want and they also said that it would be a lot cheaper than having it stripped

Heeey! Well okay I'm sorry to hear your having such troubles with gettign the black out.. I am 13 years old and I started dying my hair when I was around 11.. my natural colour is a med brown . At first I dyed it blonde and brownish red and darker brown tones.. then I decided to dyed it JET BLACK:| worst mistake of my life. It is so hard to get out... I went to a salon and they strpied it and gave it highlits and after sitting in the salon chair for 5 hours.. it was finally out . Then a few months later I wanted to dye it light brown and just my luck it turned out jet black again! I don't have the money to go out and get it profeshionaly done again but I have found that washing it with dishsaop and using a verrry deep conditionrer after has really helped lighten it A lot now it is a dark brown

Well I have dark blond hair with a little red and I tried to dye my hair brown and it turned out midnight black.. I cryed.. so from there I dyed it light brown but it didn't help so I tried golden blond and now my hair is a lighter brown with a bit of red.. I figure next week ill dye my hair another blond color and it should turn out the way I want or close to it.. ive been dyeing may hair for years.. and I don't care what anyone says.. u don't have to strip your hair or go to a hairdresser.. so if you just go really blond it might turn red.. but that's OK.. just wait a week and then buy a light brown and it should take the red out and your hair will be a brown.. I never take anyone's advice and I'm glad I didn't cause to have ruff hair right now from bleaching... it would suck... so if go 2 Facebook... if you have one... and look up my name... Howard Erin Sangster.. u will be able to see my results on my hair.. the very black and the now.. HOPE I HELPED

Black is actually the worst hair color anyone can choose because it is a hassle to get it out. You have to bleach your hair. There is no going around it, it doesn't matter how pretty they put it bleach will be the most important ingredient in whatever product they refer you to. There are dyes by Clairol that have booster in it. Boosters actually do work. They are blond hair dyes with boosters to make the hair lightest possible. With me, I feared the 100% potent bleach because I lost my hair twice because of it. If you want to take it that professional, then you got your answer a professional. Make sure you find the right person, a person that it is a professional. If you choose to do it at home, try finding Miss Clairol's dyes with booster. Any dye with a booster in it will help lighten your hair. Remember is not like if you want to go blond. You just want to kill that black. The less you lighten, the less damage you will cause. Buy lightest brown color dye, so that you can put it after processing the black out. You have to be infront of a mirror at all times, so that you can monitor the process, onces it turns at least medium brown take it off. Once it is no longer black, then you can take it out. Wash and condition your hair. Buy yourself a nice hair treatment with shine and things like that. Your hair will need it because bleach tends to leave your hair dull and brittle. Even if you are going to dye your hair right away, make sure you wash your hair thoroughly. Once hair is clean, put on the nice dye, wash again and condition. Remember there might be a second time to redye your hair with that color you really liked, just to give it that final touch. Finally put on a your 30 minutes hair treatment. Now you are ready to go. Try buying infusion 23 so that you can use it for your hair often. Best of luck!!

WEll I do not believe in using hair color removal, bleach or any other similar products, unless it is on small sections for highlights. My advice is to avoid this a long as you can stand your hair color. There are other alternatives which can ease you along the way on the road of your hair fading. Since you simply want any brown, you have a good chance in recovering your hair back to a color you can tolerate. Are you sure you are dark brown? Many people thinnk they are darker than what they are. If your complexion is light or dark, this could be true. If it is medium, your hair is probably more medium brown. A swach at the hair salon will match your roots (if you have any now) to your natural shade. Your shade is one shade darker than that. So assuming you want, lets say medium brown, to give you more of a difference from black. USe a regular permanent, NOT for lifting or for bleach in medium natural brown. At least 24 hours later use a semi-perm in MEdium ash brown. The ash is essential, I think. It will give you a natural shade. Continue the semi-perm color about every three weeks as long as you are not happy with your base. Eventually, the tone of the perm you used under neath, will come through to a nice, medium brown shade. The way I suggest ensures no way of having ugly hair colors in between each stage of fixing your hair color, and I believe in this concept. Good luck

Id say the best way to obtain a brown shade from black hair is to bleach it first. Just to take it light enough for the brown dye to take effect.
However you need to remember bleached hair takes colour more strongly than natural hair so you might want to try a lighter shade of brown than desired just in case. X

I recently dyed my hair what I thought was a medium brown. Well, needless to say, it turned very dark brown with black ends. I am trying to grow my hair out so the last thing I wanted to do was strip the color out which causes a lot of damage and can make the hair very brassy.
I let the color gradually fade on it's own, which it did, but very slightly. I re-touched my roots with a level lighter hair color which blended wonderfully with the rest of the hair. Do not put anymore color on the rest of the hair, because the hair will just absorb the color and turn murky and/or darker or perhaps another strange tone.
I went to the salon and had my hair highlighted with different subtle shades of carmel, dark honey and the overall effect lightened my hair of course, with minimal damage, and it actually looks very nice! I ended up with medium brown hair, no strange undertones, virtually no damage and a lot of shine.

I dyed my hair a darker brown about a month ago. It turned out black at first, now its more of the darker brown as I wanted. Now, I want my hair to be lighter. I've tried dying it lighter browns, but all it did was dye my roots. It doesn't look bad, I'm just going for a lighter brown. I read about Prell shampoo, and I have used it. I think some color washed out because the water was black. I want to know, how long I will have to use prell, or if there's anything else that'll help speed up the fading?

Kd09... I am a hair stylist... speeding up the fading is possible, but it sounds like you went pretty dark and there is no easy answer. You can try a clarifying shampoo mixed with a tablespoon of baking soda to make a paste, leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse. This doesn't work overnight but will help if you give it time. Make sure to condition really well because it will leave it feeling gross. If you decide you can't wait and want to strip it let me know and I'd be glad to walk you through it.

I've read about loreal color zap, and I heard that it takes out all the dye but some said it left the top of their head orange? How bad will it damage your hair, and if I dye after using it, will the color take okay?

I don't know because that is an over the counter product I've never used... I only use the professional products... I can tell you that any product that acts as a lightener similar to bleach will leave you with a funky color, especially at the scalp because that area has not been colored as much as the midshaft and ends... no matter which one you choose you will have to re color to counteract the tones and hues left... it won't take you back to where you were before no matter what you do.

Use a clarifying shampoo, which removes impurities from the hair. After you mix the shampoo with the baking soda and apply it, you can put on a plastic cap and use the heat of your hair dryer to help. This is not a quick fix, it will only lighten a little at a time but is the best way to remove as much of the color as possible before deciding to strip it, get highlights to lighten it up, or re color...

Hi!
I have the same problem actually... I dyed my hair with normal chemical color in a darkbrown shade - but its more into black. I want to go back to a nice chocolate-/castana brown.
Can I use the baking soda/shampoo thing several times a week or will it harm my hair? How about the quantity? Can I use more than 1 tablespoon? My hair is very long - up to my hips - so I think 1 tablespoon will be too less...
Cheers!

diamonddubai... yes, you can do it several times a week, but it does tend to make your hair feel dry like straw, so invest in a good conditioning treatment to do in between. My favorite is Redken's Extreme reconstructor, or the Joico reconstructing conditioner. And, yea, use a lot more shampoo and baking soda because you have a lot of hair... good luck!

Thanks jenn for your answer! Can't wait to get rid of this hair color. Was just wondering if it's a must to buy baking soda. I used baking powder (foster clark's) and this has sodium bicarbonate e500. What you think? Baking soda would be better? Yeah, today I will go for nice conditioner shopping :-)

ITS POSSIBLE! Even at home. I just dyed my hair BLACK as in JET BLACK last week. It was horrible. I looked like a gothic girl. I went to the salon to ask and they said it wouls cost me $100(singapore dollars) to get it back to brown. It was too expensive so I started reading forums and all said I had to go to the salon or I have to bleach it first! I was so disappointed. So one day I went to the drugstore and saw LOREAL FERIS COLOR BOOSTER series. It promise to lighten the darkest hair(although I didn't knmow they meant natural dark or dyed dark). But anw I decided to try my luck. I couldn't wait for at least 2 weeks . So I dyed my hair using the P10 cool chestnut brown. And guess what? I'm brown again! It is v noticeable in the sun and a dark brown indoors. However it has this tiny red undertone to it. It doesn't matter. Because I got rid of my black hair!:)

I really really need some help as I'm so confused with all the replys I've been reading on different websites lol!
I have been dying my hair for a couple of years now and I'm now a dark brown, few months ago I put a reddish brown on my hair and decided to put some blonde chunks through as well. Where I bleached it so much it did eventually start to break off so I dyed my hair dark brown all over again.
Ive now got to the point where I want to gradually get my hair to a dirty ash blonde as I had this colour few years ago and recently saw photos of me when it was this colour and loved it.
How do I go about starting this process? What will mixing peroxide with shampoo do?
I live in the UK and I'm a student so I don't have enough money to go to a salon
Please help
:)

When you have a new question, it's best to start a new main thread.
Use a reducing-type color remover (ColorFix, Color Zap, Color Oops, Igora Phantom, Color Charm Color Corrector) to get out the black. You may need (probably will need) more than one application of color remover. After that, you have to decide whether it needs to be bleached to get it as light as you want, or whether you can dye it directly. Hair dyes only lighten 2 or 3 levels (at most). Bleach can lighten 7 levels or more. Black to light blonde is 10 levels.
The above-mentioned color removers are not bleaches. In fact, they're the opposites of bleaches. Bleaches are oxidizing agents. These are reducing agents (aka anti-oxidants). Here is a site with instructions for colorfix.
ColorFix instructions - Robert Craig Salon Products, Ltd. (http://www.robertcraig.com/php/index.php?location=colorfix)
You can also Google "Color Zap Instructions" or "Color Oops Instructions".

Well I just dyed my hair dark chocolate brown,it turned out black because I left the dye in too long.I tried the dish soap thing and the silver shampoo but that didn't work.what I think I'm going to do to fix my hair is dye my hair with a light brown mabe even 2,then waight a week or so then dye it a bit darker, and definitely not leave the dye in 4 more than the box says to,and also when your buying the dye make sure you cheak the side of the box,I'm sure you know this already but it will show you what colour your hair will be in the end dapending on what colour your hair is,I found that nice and easy in a wihte box workes really good because its not a cream and it comes with a condishiner in a blue bottle,it makes your hair feel so healthy, shinny, soft, not greasy, not dry,and before I dyed it,my hair was really frizzy and dry,it only took like just more than 10 min to straighten my hair,it took like 40 min before I used that conditioner, and remember when your dyeing your hair darker leave it in 4 what ever the box says but if your dyeing it lighter double the time unless it feels uncomfortableive wasted soooo much money on dye,but whatever you do don't bleach it,your hair will be soooooo damaged!!

If your planning on going black and already have dark hair or light hair, I would recommend buying a cheap dye.
I naturally have light brown hair and wanted to dye it black so I bought the cheapest one and it lightened up and back to my natural color with in a month or two, without the skunk look.
It gave me a chance to experiment with my looks with out too much damage. But I would recommend a soft black jet black can damage your hair.

Hey :) I'm currently in the same situation, what I've been doing for the past 6 months I've been bored with my black hair is dying the roots chocolate brown when they come in, don't dye the rest of your hair.. just the roots, and yes it does look a little funny but hardly noticeable. When my chocolate brown color is long enough I'm going to cut the black off. This could take a long time and commitment, but it's worth it to not damage your hair...
(This is only if you don't want to go to the salon.)
If you don't want to do it this way, then def. go to the salon before you ruin your hair.

I naturally have a medium brown hair color. I thought black would look really good on me, but my parents wouldn't let me dye it black, ANY other color but black. So, when I told my parents I was going to dye my hair dark brown they said okay and took me to the store. I grabbed a black hair dye box without my mom knowing, bought it, and went home and dyed it. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. I told my parents I accidentally grabbed the wrong box without looking, they believed it, but I HATE my hair now and I don't know what to do... I've finally got my hair soft and alive again but it's still black. I don't want my hair to die again so I'm going to have to wait until my hair grows back out and is it's natural color again...

My hair is naturally a medium brown,I have died it ever since I was 12,I have been blonde, brown, red, purple, ginger and BLACK! And worse of all black,I am now 15 and last christmas when I was 14,this was when I died my hair black! I hated it sooo sooo much and just wanted to get it out but my mum wasn't so keen on paying salon prices. I was going to strip it,but that's quite expensive and also my hair is very long and because it damages your hair your hairdressers adivise you to cut at least 2 inches off it, I didn't want any length of it :-( Anyway,in May I decided it was time to at least attempt to do something about it! So with huge roots I went to the hairdressers and showed her the ash brown colour that I wanted. She said she could get me to that colour, but gradually. So I agreed. She first did a full head of highlights with foils which lifted the colour and made the whole head look a chocolate browny colour. Then the next time I went she did another full head of highlights and that lifted it to almost the colour I wanted but it still had some dark into it. So the next time I asked for more blonde. This resulted in it going much more blonde than I wanted. But I lived with it for six weeks. Then went to get it again and got lowlights put through it so it was just about right again! But then I decided I wanted it darker but instead of having lowlights I wanted it to be an all over colour! Just an all over colour of light brown. So I asked and she said she couldn't do it as it would turn green, what she could do was turn it into a dark to medium brown.. so she did it. And it turned into the DARKEST brown possible,in fact in my eyes its black! It may as well, be. So after paying £25 pounds a time,I'm back to where I started from!! Wish I'd of never died my hair x

I have had Jet Black hair and to go a dirty blonde I bleached it twice a week then used a medium brown hair dye. Had it deep conditioned then started the process again until I got to the colour that I wanted.
I'm not suggesting that this is ideal it's just how I did it.

Ok, all you people out there should try this if you have jet black hair you don't want.
It may damage your hair a bit, but it will lighten up your hair.
Go to the store and get either hydrogen peroxide at its highest percentage, or a hair dye developer crème.
I Suggest ion's 20 vol. developer.
Ok so when you take a shower use the developer before you condition your hair let it sit for 10-20 min. then rinse it off and put conditioner.
Hope it lightens your hair.
Or just wash with some like super strength dishsoap.

Black is one of the worst colours you can die your hair. I dyed my hair jet black about 2 and a half years ago, this was on of the biggest mistakes of my life! My natural hair color is a medium brown and I would like to go back to that color. I've tried everything! I do not believe in bleach as it leaves the hair brittle and ruff, I advice everyone to not bleach there hair! I bought two bottels of colour before from my local shops (as my hair is very long) and two dark blonde hair dyes. I put the color before on my hair and left it on for an hour, making sure a lot of heat was at my hair to make the process work. I then washed it out.. The results were brown/red and orange! I left my hair for 24 hours then put the dark blonde hair dye on.. And left it on for a hour. Washing this off I relised I was back to my neaturel dark brown hair! Now I don't have to die my hair as my roots come back the same color as my hair:D
