It is difficult to answer your question without more information.
It appears that you are taking about non-resident tax return Form 1040NR-EZ.
Which visa do you have and what is your citizenship?
On non-resident tax return, you don't get standard deduction.

Dear Mukat,

Sorry for the lack of detail.

I am an Indian resident here on F1. Single, head of household.
I attended business school 2006-08.
Filing 1040-NRez for 2007.

w2 14550 federal tax
440 state tax

now I understand I can take 1 personal exemption for $3400 and under Indian us tax treaty std deduction 5350. (IF I take SD I cannot itemize state tax as a deduction , right?)

14550- 8750 = 5800 (not deducting state tax as claimed SD)

I see the tax for that is 583.

Question 1) People say at my income being a single, student, household head and with tuition payment of 40K in the year I should have no tax at all.

Am I missing any deduction or exemption or is the above accurate?

Thank you.

1. It appears that your status is Single. You can be Head of Household only if a qualifying child lived with you.
2. Page 6 of instructions to Form 1040NR-EZ says that a student form India you can take standard deduction instead of the itemized deductions.
Thus if you take standard deduction you can not take itemized deduction.
3. Tuition expense deduction is not available to non-residents.
4. Your income is not subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes.
5. Your calculation for federal taxes seems correct. On your state tax return, you should get a refund.
6. With your non-resident return, you must also file Form 8843.

A non-resident alien filing Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ CANNOT file as Head of Household.
