Hey everyone. I am on my xbox and laptop whenall of a sudden it will take ages to load a webpage or my xbox will lag. The router stays connected but there is definitely a problem. I think it is the router because when I reboot it it stops. Any help please?

Thanks.

If you reboot the router and it's normal again, then sure it is probably the router. It may be getting bogged down or having glitches.

There are really only three things to try:

1) Reset the router to defaults and change the settings you need. Just in case it's one odd setting causing issue.

2) Update the firmware. There is usually a button or link inside the router config that lets you search for updates, otherwise, it will at least show you the firmware version and you can look up the model and see if there is a new one.

3) Bite the bullet and get in to a new router.

I suppose there is a faint chance that the PC or Xbox is doing something exceptionally weird to bog down the router, if I were to guess, it would be the xbox. Maybe it is trying to update something? Keep connected to some server somewhere? Downloading a movie or game demo?
To test that, next time it slows down, look at the lights on the router, is either port blinking the light a lot more than the other? When it is slow, just try disconnecting one or the other to see if it comes back to life before rebooting the router.

Good luck!

I am still having problems I have tried 2 and don't think 3 is a problem but with 1 I don't know what settings I should have?

All the default settings should be fine, but generally you want to turn up security. So create a password to log in to the router, and turn on WEP, etc..

If you know anybody who has a router you could borrow to test with for a day, that might help. If it bogs down a different router as well, something is up with your devices. If it does not bog down another router, then yours is bad or not handling something properly.
