We are in the market for a new top load washer. There seem to be a couple different style agitators available. Some have something that looks like a "Screw" and they have kind of turn and stop, turn and stop action. Suppose to pull the cloths to the bottom of the drum or something like that. Others are just the normal looking round agitator. Just goes back and forth. Which is better? Salesman are no help... Thanks, Rick

Whirlpool, Whirlpool, Whirlpool. Stay away from the Maytags, Amanas, Fisher & Paykels, etc. Whirlpool's top loading washer has been in production since about 1980, give or take a couple years. It's basically been unchanged since then, and in my humble opinion, that is what makes a good machine.

Thanks Applguy for the reply. We are looking at whirlpool washers right now, as the one we have has been very good for us since 1990. But it's getting a bit noisy on the wash and spin cycle(Still works fine), so we are looking for a replacement. I was just curious what the difference is in agitator designs. What do you think about the Frigidaire models?

At 64 yrs old, have had a few washing machines in my time! I personally like the "screw" agitator ones, because they seem to do a better job cleaning clothes.; but that's just my thoughts, not based on any Consumer Reports' testing, etc.
Whirlpool is one of the best.
Be sure to get one with at least 3 different water load levels; small load, normal, and heavy loads. Also, with Permanent press, as well as Cotton cycles of washing.
That simply means that the agitator doesn't "agitate" as hard; better for delicates that can be washed in water.

Thanks Fred. That's what I needed to know. I kind of thought the screw type might be better, but never having had one, I didn't know for sure. I'm going to find a Whirlpool with the screw type agitator and go for it. Once again, thanks for the info and have a good day...
