We recently bought a 87 Subaru GL wagon. It had to have the after market weber carb rebuilt. But after that it ran great, until today:( We were driving on the freeway at 75 to 80 mph abot 20 miles out of our town and I smelled coolant and checked my gauge. It was past the hot mark! I pulled off the freeway immediately and turned it off. Opened the hood and it burled out a bit of white steam from it being hot. I noticed the fan wasn't running at all. Shouldn't the cooling fan be running even if the cars off if the engine is that hot? It stopped steaming after a few minutes.I opened the rad cap and the radiator was empty and coolant was sprayed all over the underside of the hood. I checked for broken hoses but didn't see any. I let the car sit for about 30 minutes and drove it to the gas station a few feet away and the tailpipe was smoking bluish smoke. It wasn't white and it smelled like exaust not coolant. It has all the power like normal and dosen't putt. The only thing is the idle seems quite a bit lower then it was. I might add that I checked the oil and coolant several times to make sure it was normal color and not milky. Soooo,I am basically stumped? I don't know if the headgasket blew or what since I don't see any signs. After I let it sit for 30 minutes to cool off, when I started it,the temp started to climb pretty fast. Is this normal even after it sat? Now it is just smoking little blueish smoke but not overheating. Could it be that it got water down the carb through the filter? Could I of blown the headgasket even though the signs aren't there?
Where would the fan relay be located on this car? Checked the fuse panel inside as well. Please help us get this car back on the road.. Thanks for your help!
