With the growing popularity of high definition programming that could depend upon what equipment you are using.
If your satellite receiver generates standard definition analog output it should be connected to the RF or composite inputs (video and two stereo in jacks) of your VCR. There should be connections between the output of the VCR and input(s) on the TV. With this arrangement pressing the "play" button on the VCR's remote normally allows you to view the tape on the TV. The VCR resumes relaying the satellite signal when the tape stops.
High definition satellite receivers would require a component or HDMI connection directly to the high definition TV. That type of TV often has additional sets of inputs for composite and RF signals from equipment like VCRs and older console video game systems. Unfortunately there are a few variations on how to select program sources with the TV's remote control. While some sets allow you to cycle through sources with an "Input" button, some others require you to enter a special "channel" number that displays one of the composite inputs (some TVs have multiple composite inputs). On some sets with that feature you might be able to reach that "channel" by tuning the set's lowest channel and pressing the channel down button.
