Hello all.
I am in desperate need of help. My brother and I were born in Canada to our Canadian parents. My parents divorced, and my mother moved to the states. My mother (now a US Permanent Resident) married a US Citizen. The US Citizen (my dad) adopted us when we were 2 and 3 years old. We were given adoption papers by the US govt. We were given Social Security Cards, etc. While my mother is still a permanent resident here in the US, my brother and I have always thought we were US citizens.
However, my brother lost his license and needed proof of citizenship to get it. He called homeland security to get a Proof of Citizenship paper. They said he is NOT a US Citizen. He has to report on Sept 26th and will most likely be deported because he has a conviction and spent time in jail.
However, he has lived here for over 25 years and hasn't gotten into any trouble since his release 4 years ago. He graduated college in the US, has held a job in the US, etc.
Is there any hope? How do we get him to become a US Citizen? Shouldn't the fact that my father adopted us be enough? Also, my mother's mom was a US Citizen. I have no problems cause I married a US Citizen, but he needs help.
What do we do to keep him from getting deported to Canada? He has his entire life here and doesn't know a single soul in Canada. He cannot leave!!
Much appreciation.
Thank you,
Jenn
