OK, I was directed to this topic.

What is the ultimate goal of CERN?
What's the bottom line?

Pssst over here: scary stuff (https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/other-member-discussions/scary-stuff-257980.html)

The BBC have done a good piece about it: BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Large Hadron Collider: Guide introduction (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7543089.stm)

Today it was confirmed that CERN did NOT got on full "steam" a week ago : there were strong leaks of liquid helium preventing the system to go to max. capacity.

May be an omen ?
May be a warning ?

We have at least about a month to rethink... 2 weeks to warm the system up to allow repairs, and another 2 weeks to cool the system down again to "near absolute zero" Kelvin.

Maybe we should use that time to rethink what the heck they are doing there...
