Joining the gym and using the gym are two different things. It is physically impossible to be actively working out on a regular, long-term basis without positive results. I know that pills seem like the easy way out, but I wouldn't trust them. Diet pills get pulled off the shelves all the time because they're found to be dangerous, addictive, or even deadly. Your doctor said not to take them, and I would stick with that idea 100%. In any case, pills can only get some weight off. Only a new attitude towards diet and exercise can keep it off. Throw garbage foods, sugar bombs and anything prepackaged out the window, join a daily yoga or dance class, and I promise you'll be looking and feeling better in no time.

Change is a gradual step. Sometimes when people joins a gym they expect a change right away and when they don't they automatically think it's not working and quit.

Exercising is not only good for losing weight but it good for your overall health. It can help prevent or lower high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. It helps increase the endurance around your heart and lungs, good for your circulation, even help add years to your life, gives you energy, and is good for your mental health because it keep you from being stress.

You should give it a try again and eat right. Having a good diet and exercising works hand in hand. Good Luck. Also, never go against your doctor orders. He/she knows what is right for you and if they didn't care he/she wouldn't advised you not to take diet pills.
