I am trying to get my comp on the internet... I am running windows xp w/o service packs... it says connected but pages won't open up... I went to try and renew the ip address through ipconfig and get the following error?

An error occurred while renewing interface local area connection: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out...

I have no idea how to fix that... please help

Can you ping anything?

Start>run>cmd.exe [Enter]

Type:
ping www.google.com

Does it timeout? Or does it return 4 good requests?
Are you using a router?

Check the network card as well. (Right click my computer> properties> HArdware > Device manager)
Are any devices showing errors?

Hi,
Where does your computer receive it IP address. Ipconfig is properly used by first using the "release" switch before using the "renew" switch. At any rate if you are using DHCP, your computer is not communicating with the server to obtain a new address.
I use ping sometimes but use tracert more often. Just a bit more info returned and a different IP protocol used.
Peace,
