Hi everyone...
I have a 94 jeep grand cherokee ltd ,inline 6,4.0liter
Now the problem is recently it has not been turning on.. I have tapped the starter and by miracle it turned on just that one time... and so I replaced the starter along with the relay (starter fuse)and still not turning on.the battery is still good but can't seem to find the problem.:confused: :confused:
Any answers or suggestions would be great as I need this thing back on the road asap!!

When you say not turning on, what do you mean? Is the dash lighting up? Or is nothing happening when you turn the key? Is your starter not turning over? Please be more specific

You the starter is not turning over... everything else works like the lights ,dashboard etc.
Accept the starter won't turn over ,any ideas of why?

What is the age of the battery?

Maybe 3yrs old

Is it a cheap brand? I would recommend getting a battery checkup, usually these are very low cost and comonly free, batteries are commonly one of the most overlooked starting problems. Check the simple things first then work from there... :)

What was the CCA of his battery? Was it used in the same vehicle?

Ok well since we have ruled out the battery, You have replaced the rellay?

Did you clean your electrical connections at your starter when you replaced it? What was their condition?

For the heck of it, Try Putting your vehicle in Netural and starting it.

If you have a friend handy,, and a multi meter check to see if your getting power at the starter.

CCA rating is Cold Cranking amps, was this battery you used equal or greater than yours. It should be stamped on top of the battery,

To check voltage at your starter. Use a Volt meter or Multi Meter, Hold the Black Probe on a exposed grounding point... usually any unpainted surface, then take The red probe and hold it on the wire coming from your starter solenoid, Looks like a mini starter ontop of your starter unit, there should be a big thick cable from the battery that hooks to this and then a smaller wire, touch it to the smaller wire connection, but do not puncture any wires,

Ok here is a Diagram, Make sure you have clearance from vehicle and if lifting make sure the vehicle is properly supported... but you shouldn't have to lift it, you could actually get to this from the top, its just bellow the oil filter,

Picture 2 is a multi meter,

Put your meter on VDC you should see between 11.8 and 12.1 v here.

Now there is a smaller wire here also, this is from the ignition, disconnect this and check that while key is turned, becarefull not to damage the connector with your probe.

Well the connecctions I did clean the rellay has been replaced and have already tried starting the jeep on neutral numerous times lol...

Well The big wire should read the voltage of the battery.but the small wire will have some drop Not much though... If your getting a reading

Sounds like a ground problem,make sure all connections are clean and tight.If you have a test lite try seeing if you actually have power going to the starter.Place the ground from the test lie to any metal part close to the starter then put the test lite on the positive cable going to the starter.That will determine if you have power going to the starter, get back to us with what you came up with.

Hi.. I tried the meter test ,now the bigger wire is reading 12.0 and the smaller wire is reading 00.0 which is no power can I ask why? And how can I solve this problem

Did you check the smaller wire while the key was turned at the same time?
If not, it will read 0 because this is your signal wire from the ignition switch.

Let me know if you did it with the key turned, if you did than there is either a bad netural safety switch or a bad ignition, which I can tell you how to test.


Basically this test is ruling out the starter or solenoid or relay problems, so its important that they key is turned and held at the START position

K tried that with the key turned at the start position and still reads 0 so how can I test the neutral switch and the ignition?

OK this is what I'll have you do first, look for your neutral switch Unit (Picture 1) it should be on the passenger side of the trans about mid level between the front and the back.
First find your connector disconnect it, turn your key to RUN, take your multi meter Test as the second picture shows between pins B and C on the SENSOR side of the pins NOT the Connector
Now
Make yourself a 4 inch long jumper wire with about a half inch striped off each end.
Reconnect the connector and take one end of your jumper wire and insert the ends through the back with a YELLOW/ DARK Green wire and then the other end into the wire that is BROWN/ LIGHT GREEN OR between Terminals B and C

I'm not sure if your familiar with wiring but the first color is the primary color and the second is the color of the line on the wire. Make sure you clean the wires good here so your sure.
Once you have your jumper wire inserted, try and crank the car now, if your switch is bad the car will start.

Will advise you how to replace once you test.

Ps... your jumper wire should be 14 ga 16 min

Also when testing put your multi meter on continunity testing,, if it has it, it looks like the symbol in the first picture
If not put it on ohms (second picture) and you should get 0 ohms between the pins

Where exactly is the neutral switch unit.. like is it noticeable (closer to the top of the or to the bottom of the engine)cause I can't seem to find it

You will have to lay on your back under the car,, its on your transmission passenger side about midway between the end of the trans and beginging

well I guess I should have asked you,, Is yours 4x4 or 4x2?? Im sorry I thought I saw 4x4

The picture I gave you first is for 4x4 so this is probably why you can't find it,

here is what a 4x2 will look like, check the color of the wires here and if they are the same as I told you proceed as I stated, they should be.

You its stays 4 by 4 all the time with 4 lo... so I guess it is a 4by4

The jeep did start once again the thing about it was ,I read the check engine code trick thing where you turn the key to on and off 3 times.. anyways it said that the battery was not connected which it was.. so out of curiosity and for the last time before I gave up I disconnected the red wire which is connected to the fuse underneath the steering wheel ,right beside the brake pedal and to my surprise it worked.(I hope this is the problem lol).but thanks a million for your help much appreciated!

Nice, well just for the next guy, you should have mentioned that your check engine light was on ;)

Not sure what you did, maybe there was a security system malfunction or a auto start system?

No, the check engine light was not on.. here let me explain,on jeeps u can figure out the codes by the check engine light.. u simply put the key in the ignition turn to on and repeat 3 times the 3rd time around leave it in the on position(off-on,off-on,off-on)after a while the check engine light will blink at you telling you the code ,for example 1 blink is 1 two blinks is2 and so forth (there will be a pause between the two digits and there is only two digits)after these two digits it will always clear itself by 55 (5 blinks followed by 5 other blinks)...
