How long are you leaving the plates etc in before washing? If you put some dirty dishes in and don't plan on washing for a few days... run it on rinse cycle... that will get the chunks off.

Check all the little holes in the sprayers... make sure they aren't clogged. Try a different detergent as well.

Make sure you have a high loop drain out of the dishwasher. This prevents dirty water from washing back into the dishwasher. All you have to do is look at the drain line it should have a loop in it that is above where it drains into the sink drain.
Some of the plumbers on the board have talked about it here https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/plumbing/sink-drain-vent-39390.html

High loop or counter top air gap are needed to prevent back flow. Some local codes will require an air gap only. You should also inspect the strainer down in the sump area to make sure its not full of last weeks dinner.

This is mrs. iraL who actually ususes the machine-i don't know about drain issues, but it doesn't clean "fresh" dishes either, we have checked the holes, and cleaned them, it didn't make a diff, also even the soap dispenser doesn't get fully rinsed out, It worked fine until 6 months ago, and then just stopped.

If your soap dispenser is not getting rinsed there is probably a water circulation problem. Check all spray jets to make sure they turn with very little effort. Some machines have a tube that pops up from the bottom during operation to supply water to the top wand.
