I have re-wired my ceiling fan switch (black = L, gray = 1, brown = 2, green = 3) and it still does not work at all. Do I need a new capacitor? Do hardware stores sell them?l

Lets first hear why you replaced the old switch, are we sure it was a bad swicth to start with? What colors come off the wall switch and what do you have up on the fan. The fan is usually Black=blk, blue=bl, whire=w and green=ground

B I think it's a pullchain switch.

You may not have the correct pullchain switch. But answer B's questions first. What was wrong with the fan in the first place?

I turned on the fan and the chain pulled completely out of the switch.
Bought a new switch, but forgot to write down the wiring. Mistake one. Guessed at it and got the thing to work with 2 low speeds, no medium speed and a high speed. We don't like low and high, so it was useless without the medium speed. Switched the gray and brown wire, and then nothing worked.

Logged on to this site, got the "correct" wiring (above in first question), and still nothing works. It is a hunter fan. Black, gray, brown and green wires.

Now, could a capacitor or some other component have "blown out" due to incorrect wiring? Could the switch have gone bad (a $3.45 solution), or what? Just wondering. Not an electronic wizard.
