For Joint Health and Function I give my dogs Glucosamine. I get it at Walmart. One of my friends who is a breeder recommended it.

First check with your vet before trying any home supplements, or vitamins to your dog, to make sure the dosage is correct. Glucosamine/Condroitin is a good supplement, as mentioned. A very good diet supplement for dogs (and humans, I will add) is Himalayan Goji juice/berries.
I have arthritis myself, and it helps A lot! I know people that give it to their dogs for various health conditions, including arthritis, and it is completely natural ingredients. It seems to help the dogs tremendously! They do sell some brands at Walmart, and at health food stores, but I find the only kind that works for me, (and this is NOT an advertisement for this company) is from a company called Freelife. You can just Google it.
From the info I've gotten, the reason that the brands at Walmart etc. aren't as effective, is because there are about 3000 different type of these berries. At the company where I buy my juice from (I have tried the others also, and they didn't work for me or my dog) have narrowed it down to the one berry, that has the best healing properties.
Hope that gives you a little info, and I hope this doesn't get too painful for your dog until you can get him/her on a good regimen.
(If you get the Goji juice, all you have to do is add a capful or two into his water everday)
