So the thing is I'm going to call a guy I have seen a couple of times, if he doesn't answer I will drop him a text, really like him but have just come out of a very long relationship and think he is being a bit cautious, guess I want to know if he does really like me or if he is holding back and using my recent break up as a bit of an excuse... how do I play this one

He is supposed to be cautious, you're a stranger, and its important not to overdo it. One call is enough I think, as if he is interested, he will call you back.
