15 days ago we had a fire in our building, there wasn't much damage done but we have gone without gas (which controls our hot water, heat, and stove) for 2 weeks plus our door lock was busted in process and hasn't been fixed. We have recently found out that the landlord has given most of the other tenants a break on the rent due to the gas. But there has been no discussion with us on a break we asked him about it today and he said he would but wouldn't tell us how much. We pay 400 a month and I know that we shouldn't have to give him that much due to the problems but exactly how much should be taken off and how long should we have to deal with this?

Do you have a written lease? Read it thoroughly to see what rights you have. Also see the link in the "sticky" for your state's landlord / tenant laws.

Conduct all communication with your landlord in writing. Even if you hand him a letter that says what you verbally tell him... you want a paper trail. Tell him what your demands are and work from there. Might as well ask for the moon.

Do you want to stay, or are you wanting out of the lease at this point?
