Yes, there is a cool application called MaxiVista that I have played with before. It uses your network so there is no hardware involved.

Like to see the answer, I know of a primitive way if laptop has no video in, use a usb tuner, which has one or more video signal in(composite, component, s-video... ).

But I'm asking about a desktop and a laptop not two laptops?

Same thing
You install 2 pieces of software on the 2 machines,
One is a controller (your main PC) and one is the slave (a laptop or another desktop)
You can also connect to more then 1 slave, I had
[Laptop 1] [Desktop LCD1] [Desktop LCD2] [Laptop 2]
For a 4 monitor setup :)

I was thinking something like this, desktop would have to have matching video types:
