Our bath tub faucet leaks only when the shower is turned on, and leaks inside the faucet to the shower wall. We replaced the faucet twice, and still had the leak. What can we do to stop the leak?

Willing to bet dollars to donuts that the leak is where the shower arm screws into the pipe in the wall.
Remove shower head. Stick a large screwdriver in shower arm and use it in a rotating circular motion to unscrew shower arm. Coat threads of shower arm with liberal coat of pipe thread compound. Screw shower arm back into wall. Again use screwdriver in shower arm pipe to tighten. The shower arm must point down. As it begins to tighten you must decide if you can make another complete turn. If you over tighten but can not make complete turn, remove, re-coat threads and start over.

Actually the problem is with the faucet / diverter. When we pull up on the diverter, the water comes out of the shower head OK, but also a trickle leaks back the inside of the tub faucet housing to come out at the wall. I have coated the threads with pipe compound but it still leaks back. We replaced the spout thinking it was bad, but that did not do anything for us. We are wondering if we should try a different brand of shower diverter?

Remove the trim or cover of the faucet and see if the joints are leaking. If you have replace the faucet twice and still have the same leak, chances are that its not the joints around the faucet. Pull the escutchen around the shower arm away from the wall and (with a flashlight) look in there bet you see a leak, running down the shower riser pipe..

I am not making myself understood too well. Sorry. The leak is not on the shower head or arm, but rather on the tub spout. The water is running back inside of the tub spout to come out at the wall when the shower diverter is pulled up. We are wondering if a better brand of shower spout would do the trick. We are currently using an Ace Hardware brand tub spout. Thanks!

Sorry, do you have a slip on or screw on type spout. Appearently a screw on type. You spout pipe may be to short if you can not get it to seal. Replace tub spout pipe and use slip on type.

Harold I think you may be right about this connection being the problem. However if you have a screw on you can switch to a slip on without replaciung the stub. You forgot to mention that part. I would just try more than 3 wraps of teflon tape and see If I could get a seal.
