As in false negatives or false positives? Rarely are they wrong, but there is a risk of a false negative.

The reason I was asking is they did a blood test and it came out negative... I have all the usual signs of pregnancy like sore breasts, naseua and vomiting, more discharge than normal oderless, weight gain, clothes not fitting anymore, dull lower back ache, bloating, and my cervix is engorged and closed up... and I am more tired than normal... I felt like this with my first pregnancy and it showed up right away... My mother says that the women in my family have trouble with the HCG levels their second pregnancy... All the HPT tests have been negative and the one blood test was negative... should I wait and see if I get my next period and then talk my doctor again... I am taking prenatal vitamins, folic acid, and a multivitamin to prepare in case I am pregnant and I am eating healthy.

It's good to hear that you are treating your body as if you are pregnant, you should do this daily whether trying for pregnancy or not. At age 44, and NO chances of pregnancy, I still do this, as the vitamins are wonderful for us.

Now, let me ask you a question? Have you missed a period yet? All of these symptoms can be symptoms of a full blown period about to hit. You see, pregnancy symptoms and premenstrual symptoms can mirror each other.

If you have not missed your period, it is possible it is too early to test.

I was supposed to start my period on the 9th of August and it never came

And the blood test was when?

The blood test was on the 27th of August... and it came back negative... my mother had this problem when she was pregnant with all of her kids... all of her tests were negative until she was three months late and then it showed up in her blood. My doctor said if I don't get it by the 24th of September she is going to do a ultrasound. Should I wait until then or should I take another home test in a week

Take another test in a week. What harm will that do? LOL

But, no matter what, keep that ultrasound appointment.

Do you think that its possible for me to be pregnant even though it is not showing up??

It's possible, depending on the type of blood test taken. There are two tests qualitative and quantitative. Quantitative is more reliable as it gives you the levels of pregnancy hormone. Qualitative only gives a positive or a negative.

I am not sure what type they took they just said that it was negative.

It was probably a qualitative. You should reschedule and ask for a quantitative.

They did not say what type of test it was they just said that it was negative

That is what I am trying to say

Qualitative = positive or negative.

Quantitative gives you a specific number, this way you actually have a guess as to how far along you are in pregnancy. 0 is negative 1,500 is positive.

Apparently you were given the qualitative test, which is not as accurate.

I think I will wait a week and see what happens because the doctor thinks that I am just skipping a period... not normal for me I have them every month like clockwork. And having all the symptoms... when I was pregnant with my son who is 14 months old now I couldn't even have sex because when having intercourse and it hitting the cervix it hurt and it does now too.

Request a QUANTITATIVE blood test.

When should I request it I was just there this past Wednesday... in a week or two?

Yeah, I'd wait a week or two, you are already taking care of yourself. But when you do, ask them for the other blood test.

OK thank you... is there any other symptoms I need to be aware of

J_9
Aug 30, 2008, 04:30 PM
Can't think of any. You see pregnancy symptoms can mirror many different things. Morning sickness could be from something you ate the night before, etc.
