My daughter, 16, has suffered from swollen and painful finger joints for the past 12 months. She is a volleyball player which became very painful, but played no volleyball for the past 2 months, and her fingers still hurt. I took her to her doctor one month ago, did blood test to test for arthritis (came back negative) and was told to take one aleve morning and night against inflammation. It doesn't seem to help. School just started so she is using hands much more writing, and that is now also very painful. Any advice?

Are her finger joints (or any others) flexible. I have that problem in my hips and have been diagnosed with joint hyper-mobility syndrome. This is where the joints are ovbiously very flexible but have to work harder than other peoples causing pain swelling or sometimes stiffness. It is quite common in teens and some have it with out any pain.

Thank you for your response. She has regular mobility in her fingers, I don't suspect hypermobility... The doctor probably would have noticed that when she examined her? I'm hoping to find something for her pain/discomfort so she can continue playing volleyball... Thanks!

Time for a specialist. Try a rheumatologist
