My son was injured when he was a few weeks old. CPS got involved and took him. CPS is trying to find a family member to place him with. My girlfriend and I really have no say in the matter. If my girlfriend and I give up are rights would we still be able to place him w/ relatives in Colorado.

It all depends, how was he hurt? How old are you both? Have you got any police records etc etc

If you give up rights, you will have no chance in getting him back. You will have no rights or even a say in anything that goes on in your baby's life. They will put him where they want. You need to get a court appointed lawyer and deal with this through the system. That lawyer will give you advice on how to go about dealing with this. Good luck

They CLAIM they put kids with relatives first if there are any they feel appropriate.
They claim they give you options to rectify the situation that got your kid(s) taken off you before they adopt them out.
They claim you HAVE to sign the papers to lose your rights.

What they say and what they do are two different things.
You can refuse to sign, which I DO suggest but they will adopt him out any way.
But at least you did not sign away your rights.
I am not sure what you can and can not do from that point though.
I was still allowed my visits and over nights when they turned 14 and they were given the option to move back with me by 16.

Once you sign your rights away then you are no more than a pure stranger to your kid as far as the law goes.

Best thing you can do is get a lawyer you pay for. The ones they provide work for THEM as far as I can see!
And see if relatives is an option

Cps wants to give our son over to my girlfriends sister. I am fine w/ her sis it's her husband that scares me. He is very abusive and violent. He is a big meth head. And he hates me. Cps thinks that if my son is put w/ them they would be able to protect him from me. A few years ago I was blames for abusing my son. I didn't do it and my x knows I didn't It was her brother who did. But their family stuck togeather and blamed me for it. Because of that cps thinks I abuse my youngest son. My son was squrming in my grilfriends arms. He ended up kicking off her and she accidentally dropped him. He fell on his head. Cps took our son. Now they are saying that they are trying to place him w/ a family member. Both of our familys have tried to get him but cps has rejected them all. My girlfriend has a sister in Colorado. Cps says that they can't allow my son to leave the state because of our visitations. We were hoping that if we signed our rights away that they would let him move in w/ my sis in law. She is a wonderful person. She runs the day care at her church and her husband is a decan. They are unable to have any children so we figured if he went to live w/ them he would have a better chance at life. Cps will never allow him to return to my care. If my girlfriend wants him back she pretty much would have to blame the whole thing on me. She won't do it. Am I wrong for wanting him to move to Colorado? Is there something else I can do?

Thanks for the responses to cps vs family. Kev-

Kev, have you asked if you had a choice whether your child goes with one person or another? In all the info up there, I gather you have already given up rights, you have already signed the child over?
