Esters form part of organic families. I think that most of them have some perfume, or some stench. They are formed, in the laboratory, by reacting an alcohol with a carboxilic acid. The most common produced at school, I think, is ethyl ethanoate. This is obtained by reacting ethanol (the alcohol) and ethanoic acid (the carboxilic acid) and under reflux, to prevent escape of volatile vapours.

Hope it helped. Post back if you need more information!
