I have an ambassador ceiling fan from harbor breeze. I hooked up a double wall switch one switch works the light the other works the fan. The problem I am having is that no matter how I wire the ceiling fan up,the left side of the switch only works .and I can only get either the lights to work or the fan to work .I can't get both to work independently on their own switches.I have also changed the switch even though it was new just in case it was bad but the new switch does the same thing.

Describe wires in ceiling box, number cables, wires in each cable. By double switch do you mean two independent switches or two switches on one device. Describe wires in switch box, number of cables , wires in each cable. Connections of wires.

The switch is two switches on one device they have three wires coming out of it a blue, black, and red. The directions say the red is the light and the blue is the fan, says the black is the hot.the wires in the walls are red black and white. The fan wires are blue black and white, but the fan does not tell me what the colored wires each do.I have tried hooking them up in many different ways but nothing works right.

OK, is that the wires in the wall at the switch box.

What are the wires in the ceiling box. Tell me the number of cables and type (2-wire or 3-wire). A wire is a single wire, a cable is two or more wires in an outer covering. Do not count the ground wire.

The cable going from the switch box to the ceiling box are a red white and black plus the ground. The wires from the switch itself are blue black and red plus ground. I think I figured why only half the swith works and this is because there is no power going to the red wire coming out of the ceiling box .their is an attic above the ceiling fan that I can go up in and get right over the fan if I have to.do you think there might be a loose wire somewhere

I have to know where the power is. You have a 3-wire between the switch and the ceiling. If there is another cable in the switch box the power is coming from there. If there is not another cable in the switch box the power is coming from the ceiling.

So, is there another cable in the switch box.

Are there any more cables in the ceiling box. If there is another cable in the ceiling box, is it connected to the wires of the 3-wire cable going to the switch?

Yes, either there will be another two (or more) wires at the fan ceiling box, or at the wall box. Which is it, and what wires?

We're almost there!
