Tried all afternoon to reach our A/C man, who was here on Tuesday (when nothing was wrong with the A/C; just have him take a look at it). Everything was fine and working/cooling O.K. Suddenly this afternoon the condensing unit stopped working.

We checked the fuse box and turned the fuses on and off, we tried carefully with a stick, as suggested on this forum, to give the fan blades a 'jump start', but nothing happened.
Inside airhandler is working as is the inside blower, as we can tell.

Since it is here outside 110 degrees and the inside temperature is climbing and climbing, now at 88 degrees, we are absolutely desperate as to what to do tonight, since the BR is already 92 degrees.

PLEASE, is there someone kind and knowledgeable in A/C condensing unit matters on this FORUM who can give me another idea what to check? :confused:

What is the make and model of your system? Do you hear any thing trying to run on the out side unit.

Check your breaker in the breaker panel, turn it off and push it hard to the off position then back on this will reset it if it is tripped, next to the a/c outside unit will be a disconnect switch with fuses in it, pull the fuses and replace them if you cannot check them, good luck, Mike

We have a Goodman Manufacturing Co. Condensing Unit, Model CKT60-1AB.
There was a new contactor for $139 put in in 2005, as I was able to see from the papers the previous owner had left us when we bought this 2000 blt. Home in 9/2006. I do not know what part this contactor plays within the A/C system...

The Air Handler, which is - as we can see - working, is a model AGI-100 REV C; single circuit, and is located above our pantry in a small ceiling space. The blower of the air handler had been replaced last year.

The condensing unit outside does not make a sound :-(

I only clicked the fuses in the outside box off and on. I will go now outside and try to pull the breaker down and then on again, as you advise.
Also, I did open the elec. Box next to the condensing unit, but as I recall it said that there are no fuses in it! Will check that again too.

P.S. Just came in again from checking the electrical box next to the condensing unit: it says inside on the black electrical box that there are no fuses.
Then I went again to the outside fuse box and took the main breakr down for 1 minute, back on, anxiously trying inside again to turn the A/C on, it came on BUT outside the condensing unit still does not make a sound. And the temperature is now 91 degrees :mad:

Do this things have to happen always on a Friday afternoon? We are so disappointed and feel lost. No A/C firm here answered, of course, the telephone anymore in the afternoon on a/this Friday.

Any other suggestions?

This morning finally I was able to get the man back here who had checked and O.K.ed the system as perfectly working two days before. Now he looked into the 'disconnect switch' next to the condensing unit outside [by the way it does not have a fuse in there in our case] and told me that the wires had shortet and melted.

So, he replaced the box with a new one and, voilà, we have it again cool [82 degrees] in our home. What a relief it is... :-)
