Our five year old beagle has been through a lot of changes the past three months. We moved to Alaska, away from other family members, and we got a new puppy. The puppy is very easy going, but a little clumsy. Since then, our beagle has gone from a fun-loving, and sweet dog, to a depressed and antisocial one. He growls when anyone comes near, and snaps at our puppy when he bumps into him by mistake. What is causing this behavior? How can we fix it?

Animals do get jealous you know and if you can't see it, I can 'read' it. Puppies need attention due to their hygiene training and your older dog probably feels left out. I would suggest you play with them together to integrate both into a social situation that will probably not leave the older one feeling left out.

It also might be a good idea to get your beagle a check up it could possibly be something medical esp if the dog is snaping at everyone.

I would always suggest ruling out any medical problem when there is a behavior change. With animals, behavior changes are often symptoms of illness. If there is no medical cause, I would think the puppy has been pestering the other dog too much wanting to play and your beagle had to become snarly to get the pup to leave it alone. And he is likely jealous of all the attention puppy is getting from you all. I'd separate the two for all but 30 minutes a day and let the Beagle have time without the irritating puppy and time with plenty of solo attention from you all.
