I woke up a few days ago with muffled hearing in my left ear. It feels clogged up with earwax and there's a constant ringing, like there's water in it or something. When I went to the doctor he prescibed anitbiotics. I'm not really sure how this will help my situation. He didn't say it looked infected or anything, and he didn't seem to think it was too serious. But I'm wondering how antibiotics are going to help with my hearing, and why did it happen over night?

I am surprised he didn't check for an earwax build up. I suggest you go back and ask him and if so, your ear has to be 'blown' removing wax.

Could be tmk or sinus infection. I agree with tickle, go back to doc. Try an ent. Why take antibiotic, did he say there was an infection?

All he said was it didn't look like swimmer's ear. He didn't really tell me what was wrong with it.

This sounds like otitis media. A simple ear infection caused by fluid build up behind the eardrum, hence the sound of running water (actually it is the sound of your heart beat).
Antibiotics are the right course of action for this. Make sure you take the entire round of antibiotics. Do not stop once the symptoms are gone. This causes antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria.
