There was this cartoon movie that I watched when I was a kid and all I remember is a girl following some type of magical thread or string... she liked a boy who worked underground, maybe a mine. The evil characters... I think were trolls, and the main evil woman had a cement toe or foot.

The girl may have also had a magic ring used to follow the string

That was the Princess and the Goblin... It was magical yarn that her "great-great grandmother" gave her
