For some time now my dog rex has had these patches on his elbows. They are black and rough and there is no hair there. My mom thinks there just from how he lays but I've never seen that on another dog. Does anyone know what they could be? When he got his vaccinations on August 6th the vet looked him over and never said anything about them, but I will be going back in September so he can get his booster(since its his first time getting vaccs) and I will be able to ask the doctor then. Maybe I'm being crazy. I'd appreciate any comments.

I have a Siberian husky too, she's 10 weeks old. Yours is very cute! The patches on his elbows is from lying on hard surfaces with no cushioning. Its kind of like a callus. It occurs most often in larger dogs because of a greater weight rubbing against them. I don't believe its harmful.

I have a 150lbs Bernese Mountain Dog/Rottweiler mix, and he has those on his elbows as well. The vet has said it's just a callous, nothing to worry about :) I apply a moisturizer to it during the summer months to help keep the callous down.

Yep... elbow callous. It's pretty common in larger dogs. You can minimize it by giving Rex something soft to lie on. That's why my Trink has 3 beds... one for each room we spend time in!
