I have ceiling fan that is all the sudden running very slowly (it is about 5 years old, but I am the second owner on the home, so no owners manual). On the 'max' setting it appears to be on 'low' and on 'low' it barely spins. No pullchains. We use the wall switch exclusively --- on the switch we have a light control that works fine, and the speed control which works (but we are having problems with the speed). It does have a remote. However, it has never worked in controlling the fan (other than to 'reverse' the direction) and even that button hasn't worked in months. Any help would be great!

Likely problem is the capacitor. Parts available from CeilingFanParts.com Home (http://www.ceilingfanparts.com).

It typically has two values on it and has three leads. Pick a cap with the same or close numbers. Order and replace.

Does the fan have pullchains?

If so, open it at the ceiling, remove the remote receiver, and wire the fan without it. Check and see if it works.

If it still doesn't work it is probably the capacitor:

If it does NOT have pullchains, remove the wall control and connect the two wires that were going to it together. See if it works from the remote. If it does not, you will need to replace the remote receiver. DO NOT replace the wall control, instead use a regular on-off switch.
