My daughter attended a university in South Carolina. She had no sooner moved in good that they wanted her to sign a new lease for this year, stating that she would get her rent at the same price and not have to worry about a rent increase, She did, Since then she has had to leave this university to go somewhere closer to home to finish. All rent and utilities were paid up through the end of the current lease which expires August 16th 2008. We contacted the leasing manager June 12, when we were sure that she was not going to be able to return. We had already moved her out in May. We have tried diligently to find someone to take the apartment. We have answered ads, placed ads etc. Just not having any luck. The complex says that we will have to pay the rent on the apartment until we can find someone to take the lease. She signed this lease in November 2007 for August 2008 through July 2009. What legal action are we facing? We just do not have college money and money to pay on an apartmnet that no on is living in. By the way.. The apartment is a four bedroom apartment with individual leases ( per room)
Can anyone help me? All they will say is you are responsible for the rent.I need specific answeres as to what I am going to face. College is very expensive and I do not have extra money.Just a hard working mom who has tried to keep a decent credit rating and have always tried to do the right thing.
Please Help

Until the expiration of the lease, you're responsible - just like they told you.

Can the other 3 roomates not help find someone they want to live with them? I own property in a college town. NOW is a prime time to rent to students! Now through the first couple weeks of school. Do you have ads in the school paper, local paper, etc? Is there someone who would post flyers on bulletin boards around campus for you? Maybe for a small fee?

They can, and most likely will, sue you for any unpaid rent payments.

Until it is rented out to someone else, or the end of the lease she is responsible for it

How old was your daughter at the time she signed the lease?
