We have an upright freezer which will be 2 years old on 15th Sep.
I have let it run low on food and I read that freezers work harder when its nearly empty than when its full but I have noticed that its not freezing at all and now not even as cold as our fridge.
I put some frozen food in it today and its still not freezing and the display say 3 and the alarm light is also flashing. Is it broken??
Thanks
Marian

Yes it's broken.
It is incorrect to say that a freezer works harder when it's empty. How hard a freezer has to work depends on the outside temperature, how well it is insulated and how many times the door is opened.
What you have hear is a misunderstanding of the statement that a freezer full of frozen food will stay colder longer than a freezer with only a little food in it, should you have a power outage.
That statement is correct. The logic is simple. A cold empty box will warm up faster than a cold box full of ice. Your frozen food being the equivalent of the ice.
Find you owners manual. What does a code 3 mean? Is there any kind of reset button.

Hi,
The 3 is the temp it is inside. It was always at 18 and now the alarm light is flashing alongside the number 3.
I spoke over the phone to a man who fixes freezers and he said that it was blocked up with ice in the back due to the hot weather that we have had . I said that it was a frost free and he explained that just means that there is no ice on the food.
He told me to empty it and pull out the plug, open the door and leave it for 48 hours and try it again and I would have water on the floor.
Its been nearly 24 hours and there is a water on the floor so maybe it will work when I plug it back in. I didn't think that this would solve it but we shall see.
If it doesn't then do you think I should call out someone or just buy a new one.
Thanks for your help so far.
I can not see a reset button either.

Marian, leave it for the 48 hours as stated by the engineer - if it doesn't work then call them again and tell them you have done everything they said. I would also look into what rights you have in regards to consumer law. Appliances have a life span and if they break within that life span you are generally entitled to some rebait if the breakage isn't due to misuse. A lot of people just accept that things are broken and don't follow up on that. If you get it working again you should fill it with bread or even balls of newspapers as it keeps the freezer working more efficiently and reduces cost and waste energy.
