Hi community,

I am thinking of moving to the United States in the new year if possible. Now, I am British, and I know that I cannot go into the "Green Card Lottery" because of this, and at the moment, an old friend is helping me to secure work in the U.S (in IT).

I understand that some companies will sponsor me for a green card, but I have only one major concern:

I was thinking of going to the U.S at the beginning of 2009, however, around may of 2009, I am going to marry my fiancé. She is also quite skilled, she has a degree in Human Resources and management.

I don't want to go through the processes and settle stateside, and then find out I can't be with my wife and kids.

Can anybody comment please?

Your spouse does not need to be your dependent.. if she is a professional and can find a job offer. Both of you can be on H-1B at the same time.

Thank you very much for your advice, you have kind of answered my question, but I realised this morning that I may have written it incorrectly. (I was up late last night).

What I meant to ask was this:

If I am indeed granted a green card, and if I get married in May as I would like to, would this girl (being my wife) possibly be denied access to the United States to be with me?

I think that I understand a portion of your answer; in that if she also wants to work in the United States in her field, that she must also complete her own H-1B?

If you're married before you apply for green card, your spouse and children will be included in your petition.
