We purchased a 4 month old Westie from a local pet store a week and a half ago. (Never did before). The problem we are having is after we feed him we wait 10 minutes and go outside with him for another 10 minutes. He always pees at this time but not always poops. SO inside we go and wait another 10 minutes, this can go on and on. Finally he will go, but inevitably when our guard is down he will go in the house.
The strangest thing is he doesn't seem to accept the praise when he goes outside, he doesn't wag his tail, he doesn't get the least bit excited. Our Boxer who is 12 years old and we bought from a breeder, I think his tail has been wagging since the day we brought him home. Is it possible that some pet store puppies are just untrainable?
I am starting to think that we have made a major mistake. Please help

Cmon' now, you can't give up, after only a week and a half?
Seriously, you have not given the new member of your family much of a chance yet, have you?
Is someone home all day with the puppy?
Do you reprimand him for going in the house, and then immediately take it to the Same place when you take it outside?
Give it some time, and some love, and I'll bet it will come around, but it will take more than a week and a half.

I'm not even going to start with puppies, pet stores and puppy mills. I've worked in rescue too long.
Yes, it's possible your puppy is somehow damaged goods. He's four months old and except for the past week and a half he's probably lived in a kennel or cage with minimal contact with people. It's also very possible he's just new and confused and scared.
Puppies don't necessary poop on command or on your schedule.
I'd have the Vet check him over and make sure he's healthy and then maybe not expect so much from him for a while.
One of my dogs was a rescue and she lived under the bed for the first 2 months, came out to eat and then went back to hide. She's fine now but we didn't push her, let her get comfortable, cleaned up after her and tried not to stress her out.

Yes, I would give your puppy some more time. I have a 7 months old Yorkie, purchased from a puppy store. He will go for a long walk and not pee or poo until we get back and he goes in our back yard or on the puppy wee wee pads we have in the kitchen. We have him in a open top kennel in our kitchen when we can't watch him. That is were we have his pads. I went to Wiz Dog. Com and purchased the best indoor potty out there. We have a 8 yr old Bichon that goes outside via a doggie door and anywhere, when we take him for a walk. Never in the house. I guess it is what he is used to, or feels most comfortable doing.
