So, I am looking into getting a tattoo. And of course the obvious question, how much does it hurt is normally asked. But I am wondering what it feels like. What would you compare it to? Use detail. I am very curious! THANKS! :) :) :)

This is a good question, I am interested, too... I'm wanting my first tattoo as well.

Mines on my lower back. It feels like a cat scratch... or a needle dragging on your skin.
It may get warm. But it doesn't hurt that bad.
Also, depends where you get it.

It really depends on the person, their pain tolerance, the tattoo artist and how it's done, and where it's done.
Fingers/toes... people pass out... which is the reason that toe tattoo is now illegal in the states.
Larger areas such as the back, arms, etc.. kissme10der described it well. I heard it feels like a rather dull cat scratch. Not as painful as a sharp claw... but not like a pen going through it.. somewhere it between.

I never knew that toe tattoos were illegal... That's kind of stupid.

Weird, I never knew that..
I know my next tatt is going to be a tiny black outline of a heart on the top of my ear.
I wonder how much that will hurt.

The ear shouldn't hurt too much...
The toe tattoos are illegal because the needle is vibrating VERY close to the bone.. . when you hit the bone in that fashion, all hell breaks loose and it hurts... a lot.
I've seen people black out due to the pain... and thus, now... is illegal.

Weird... I have very little tolerance for pain. But I want a foot tat!

The foot, I believe, hurts a tad bit, but NOTHING like the toe.
What were you thinking of getting? Have you decided yet?

I haven't, and actually I have a post about it... if you want to check it out and perhaps add your two cents...

Yup, I didn't remember... LOL! Bad memory.
Still haven't figured anything out yet though.

Wow, that's all pretty crazy. Espically the bit on the toe tattoo!
I was planning on getting the latin phrase "a posse ad esse" (which means: from possibility to actuality) tattooed on my left shoulder blade. I am pretty excited about it.
Oh, and one more question about pain tolerance. How do you know if you can tolerate much? I fractured my wrist last summer and it wasn't that bad I quess. And I just got my wisdom teeth pulled. Not bad there either. How would you compare pain factors here?
THANKS AGAIN GUYS FOR ALL YOUR HELP! :) :) :)

I have a tattoo on my right ankle, it didn't hurt, I'd say it's more discomfort, like a bunch of mosquitos biting you.
I'm getting a tattoo on my shoulder blade in the winter. My friend has one on both his ankle and shoulder blade, he said the shoulder blade was a piece of cake compared to the ankle.
Here's a picture of my tat;

ChihuahuaMomma agrees: It's beautiful, what is the meaning to you?
The initials in the hearts are my mom and dads. I got the tattoo the day before my mothers funeral, my father passed away 6 1/2 months before her.
The one I'm getting on my shoulder will be three flowers, two in full bloom, to represent my two kids, and another that hasn't bloomed, to represent the baby I lost.

I believe someone said that "a tattoo feels like a catscratch". That's true. It does. But what's a little pain for an awesome tattoo? :D

I agree. But I want it to be perfect, as I will have it forever... I don't want to settle on a design!

It hurts like hell. Anyone who says it doesn't hurt it either lying or doesn't remember how bad it hurt! I have a small one on my lower belly and I got nauseous and dizzy and couldn't WAIT for it to be over. It felt like someone was digging in my skin with a safety pin and not moving it... just digging in the open wound. I almost passed out.

The best places for a tattoo are arms and legs. The most painful are the sternum, ribs, neck- close to the throat, chest, belly, spine, foot, knee... anywhere there is bone there will be some discomfort. While there are places that hurt like crazy, I try telling our customers that the feeling is more annoying than painful.
