Is chloral hydrate still a legal, prescribable med in all 50 states? I'm talking about for home use, I've heard of it being used to aid in anxiety of dental treatments and surgery... but that's not what I'm asking. Is it legal to prescribe to a patient to use at home is what I want to know. I have horrible insomnia and have tried EVERYTHING... ambien, lunesta, now I'm taking temazapam (Restoril) 30mg (least successful so far)...

Not sure about the legality of the drug, but I do know that they do prescribe an oral version of chloral hydrate to treat insomniacs. Check with your gp.

I think I'll just call the pharmacy, should've just done that first. DUH.
No offense, but why do so many people answer questions with "I don't know". If you don't know, why answer? (Not directed at you personally, just a gripe I have with this site)

The issue of being legal to prescribe, and it being approved for specific treatment is another thing. Also finding a doctor willing to prescribe some speicif drugs is the other. For example just because some research shows that a cancer treatment drug can help in migranes does not mean it will used that way by any current doctor.

I answered a portion of the question, that it's been prescribed for insomnia. I was unsure of the legality in different states.

The question was about it's legality. I already stated that I needed it for insomnia even including a list of other insomnia drugs I ave tried, so that was no part of my question. So, actually, you answered nothing.
