Do you all think it's a bad thing when a teenager is a pessimist?
I can be a pretty optimistic pessimist, but I'm realistic in life.
That's not a bad thing, right?

I just need some opinions whether they be good or bad.

People often thought I was a pessimist because I didn't want to get my hopes up just for them to be knocked down so I agree cause that is basically the way I am. You have to look at things realistically to see them objectively.

An "optimistic pessimist" huh?

That's a good one.

I think that optimists are in general, happier people in daily life.

I think that pessimists are in general, unhappier people in daily life.

The way your brain thinks and works, has a direct effect on how you live your life.

Looking constantly at the negatives, or seeing only the risk or danger in things, will create an unpleasant life in general terms while trying to find the benefits or the bright side of things, will lead to a generally happier life.

Just my opinion.

Yes, I'm an optimist at every opportunity.

I'm optimistic in my personal life, although at times a pessimist. I'm willing to admit that.
At work, I'm definitely a pessimist. For example, I'm the one always saying stuff like, 'No those boxes are not going to fit into that dumpster, there is no way we are going to get 25 boxes out in that short of time, and we aren't hitting our fragrance goal today.' I'm realistic. What can I say?
Now that I have typed that I can think of times where I've said stuff like, 'Well look on the bright side, your getting a new outfit,' or, 'on the bright side, we've hit our sales goal.'
If you haven't figured it out, I work retail.

But I do believe for me being a pessimist, I'm pretty optimistic.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it if your optimistic sometimes. As a teen I was generally pestimistic but I did have my moments.

I'm not going to change the way I am. I want to get peoples opinions on whether they think it's a bad thing or not. If a lot of people tell me being a pessimistic teenager is a bad thing, I'll respect their opinion, but I won't change. I just like to hear peoples opinions, that's all.

Pessimism as an outlook is one thing. It doesn't have to be bad. It simply means you've decided to approach life without the expectation that things will go well very often.

That DOESN'T mean you've also decided to be a mopey dopey about it. That's a second choice, one I hope you DON'T make.

I used to call myself an optimistic pessimist, too. But what I meant by that was this:

Outwardly - I demanded the best, asked for the best, worked for the best, worked to achieve.
Inwardly - I expected things to fail usually, so I wasn't disappointed when they did.

I actually used this philosophy to KEEP my positive disposition. It's not an excuse to not try, to not do my best, nor set high goals. I just didn't need/expect them to succeed to stay happy. I expected they'd often fail and that was OK, too.

So, when things went badly, I was fine. I didn't get gloomy about it.

But when things went well, I got a pleasant surprise.

I'd rather be pleasantly surprised when things I didn't think I'd achieve are achieved, than be disappointed by things I KNEW I could achieve I then fail.

It's a subtle, but useful difference.
