I live in NJ. I was unaware of the 60 days notice required before the lease end data to be given to landlord. I could give only one month notice and landlord mercilessly forced me to stay one more month at higher rental or else they will charge me one month rent.

Is this a state law ? Is there a way I can vacate at the lease end date without giving them one month penalty ?

Aren't these landlords sucking blood of poor people like us ?

They can make you stay but I really don't believe they are allowed to raise the rent since you did not sign/renew a lease. I would stay and pay him the regular amount and let him take you to court for the difference or evict you over the difference since you want to leave anyway.

No they are not sucking blood, they are inforcing the terms of the agreement, that you signed and agreed to. I don't mean this wrong but they are only asking for what they legally are suppose to get.

If you did not read or misunderstood the lease it is not their fault.
Now with that said, many landlords will work with you also, or let you do a lower price buyout on the last month
