I had my car worked on and replaced 2 oxygen sensors plus cleaning the sensors to get the service engine soon light off. It stayed off for about 100 miles then it came back on. I went back and they got it off. 40 miles later it came back on again. They said it may come back on 3 or so times before staying off. I live 40 miles from the car place. I read on another page that it could take cranking the car and driving about 40 times before it goes off. I just don't trust that to work because I drive long distances when I go anywhere. Is there any way to just get the light off without making it where it won't detect if something is wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Nissan's maintenance guideline is 3,750 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Since you drive long distances, it has to be checked frequently. Call your dealeship or your trusted mechanic for more info.

I do have my car checked frequently. That's why it was only the oxygen sensors and the gunk and that's all. That was fixed. There's nothing else wrong with it. It still comes on. I was trying to get their trick that took 5 whole minutes the last time I went there to get it off. That's what I want.

The indicator maybe is the problem. Have it checked next time.

To me, it sounds like there is a contamination problem:

Until that's taken care of, the Check Engine Light will keep coming on, once the engine warms up and is out of "open loop" mode.

I don't know how you can get away with "cleaning" an oxygen sensor. The only thing that I know that works is replacing them with a new one, being careful not to contaminate the sensor or pigtail.

Did you have the vehicle diagnosed or did someone guess that the sensors needed replacement? What type of vehicle is it that you're talking about? Have you had a computer test done and if so, what code is coming up?
