I had the fan motor in my upstairs Rheem unit replaced in August of 06 and it has gone out again. Is this normal? I am waiting for warranty info from the AC company but shouldn't these things last longer than two years?

Yes they should,, are you sure it's the motor and not the capiciter

He said the capaciter and possibly a relay caused the motor to go out. What is the normal warranty on OEM parts? Just a year or could I be lucky and it be two since next month will be two years since the original replacement. Any helpful suggestions on what else to look for when they call me with the cost tomorrow? Thanks!

May I ask why you say this. My husband said everything the repairman said to him over the phone made sense ( he has a maintenance background ). The fan does make a awful sound but do you think the relay and capciter wouldn't do this. The only other thing he said was my coils were pretty dirty also. Thanks so much for your help. Just trying to make sure I am not taken advantage of since my husband is gone, plus hate to think this could happen every two years.

A capaciter and possibly a relay can go bad and cause the motor to not run,but don`t think they can be the cause of motor going bad.in your first post you didn`t mention the motor making an awful sound, now, its possible the motor is bad, just make sure its not the fan blade hitting something ,out of balance or bent, that's causing the noise,, I agree 2 years is an awful short life for a fan motor, are you sure it was a new motor that was put in 2 years ago,, good luck

2nd question,, are you talking about the motor in the outside condenser unit,or the motor,in your furnace/airhandler?

The motor in the outside unit. My paperwork says it was OEM and my husband was here at the time but not sure if he checked it. Thank you for all your help.
