I would only recommend self piercing your lobes and helix in your own with sanitized pins. I've done it to 5 of my 9 lobs, and 2 of my 3 helix piercings. I find it a lot less painful since I have more control, and more of what I want.
For more intricate things like your snug, industrial, diath, or anything else, I would save the money and get it done by a pro. Also, see if your local piercing places have half off days. Both of the ones in my town have those, and it's a great money saver, and good for safety!

You want too watch out for self piercing you can cause infection if not done right I know you can get the stuff too pierce just about anything you want now a days at hot topic spencers and a few online shops one I get my jewelry from is FreakRings.com- Tongue Rings, Belly Rings & More! (http://www.freakrings.com/) they used too care some needles a while back but not sure if they still do but what ever you do be very careful and look in too what you want too pierce and make sure you keep it cleaned right

How do you sanitize your "pins?" Without an autoclave to sterilize everything there is always a possibility of infection.

Your best bet is too get proper needles from a piercing store or a web site that sells them like
FreakRings.com- Tongue Rings, Belly Rings & More! (http://www.freakrings.com/)

Proper needles and jewelry.
You can pierce anything on your own. However, self piercing is something that can go wrong if you don't have the proper knowledge. Keep in mind also, that piercing YOURSELF might be harder for you to do than having someone else do it (pain, etc).
Make sure you read up on it at least, and have a form of sanitizing agent available when you decide to go for it. The cleaner you keep the process, the more likely you are to heal without a problem.
For first time self-piercers, I suggest nothing surface or in the nose. And like dino said, most shops run 25-35 dollar piercing days if you want to go the easier route.

I did my lebre and my belly button myself. Just make sure the needle is sterilized and make sure you keep the piercing clean.
