Ok so I've had it! My MOM thinks she is a super mom and is getting after me and saying I am starving my baby cause I don't feed him enough! Lol, she is a bit over imaginative..

Anyhow, so me being a new mom I really don't know.. is what I'm feeding him OK? The doc seems to think so and he is gaining weight normally.. His next ck up isn't until another month..

So in the meantime.. could you offer advice or share with me what your child was eating at 5mo?

He drinks about 7 - 8 bottles a day of formula (6oz ea bottle) and also eats 1 - 2 jars of baby food. (stage 1 gerber stuff, like carrots, peas, greenbeans... )

On wknds I give him cereal when I have time to make it.. (I KNOW IKNOW cereal should be given more often right? )

Ok, so AM I STARVING HIM like my crazy mother seems to imply?? OH AND SHE sneaks him food!! LOL, I have busted his old crazy granny letting him suck on real fruits and ice cream! Fruits OK... but icecream?! NO!

She says "its my right to do that cause im his granny"

Hahaha whatever granny! :)

At 5 months many doctors recommend that they remain on formula. I am not of that belief. He should be getting 3 meals a day. Cereal to start, and a bottle, lunch should be a small jar of vegetables or meat and a bottle, dinner should be some more cereal (sticks to the ribs and keeps 'em full longer) and a bottle.

HOWEVER, this is a discussion you need to have with your pediatrician. If your child is gaining weight properly there should be no cause for concern.

Yup he is gaining weight just fine.. at our 4mo ckup he was already 15pounds. He is 25 in long. She said he is in the 70th percentile and that he was average..

I will start to feed him more cereal though. Thanks.

*** I was wanting to hear what other moms were/are feeding their babies at 5mo... we all know what the doctors recommend but I was wanting to see what kids are really eating cause according to my mom "doctors dont know anything" :) she is a nut I know.

I am a mom of 4 children. Their ages range from 22 - 6, and that is how I fed my children. So, I was answering from a mother's point of view, just reminding you to listen to your doctor as well.

We started cereal at 4 months. Just rice - but it made her so gassy, that her dr. had me give her oatmeal (which fixed the problem)

We didn't start feeding real baby food until 6 months, per her dr.
And then we would do that at each meal. (I think - it's been a while) I took forever introducing new foods, I would wait a full 7 days before I would give her the next thing. My mother finally told me I could wait like 4 days or she would be driving before she tried everything.

One suggestion - start with veggies - more specific the green ones. My doctor told me this and why - it made sense to me. We naturally go to sweeter things, if you start with applesauce or bananas, you may have a hard time getting the baby to eat peas or green beans.

Ice Cream? I would say no because dairy really should not be introduced until 12 months of age because a lot of kids can't digest it until then.

Waiting a week to introduce new foods it actually a good idea. It helps to pinpoint allergies if there are any.

I agree with the ice cream... dairy needs to wait until at least 12 months as baby's digestive system cannot break down dairy.

Also, don't forget not to feed a baby honey until after 12 months of age, it can cause botulism poisoning.

Also what exactly do you mean ? If you have time, the baby and its feeding should be about as important as it gets

But yes, as a father of 5, we started cereal at about 4 months and had them eating more meals by 5 or 6,

Fr_Chuck - I said "if I have time" because on weekday mornings (I wake at 5:30 to have as much time as I can) as I'm running out the door to head to work I sometimes don't get to make/feed him all of cereal before we have to head out the door. To fix this, I have now started to feed him cereal/rice in the evenings..

On the weekends however, we have more time and he is able to finish all cereal..

For now, (and again aftter speaking with dr yestrday) we are putting off the baby gerber stage 1 foods and will focus more on just formula and cereal/rice for at least another month.

**oh and as far as the ice cream goes.. ofcourse I know he shouldn't have it! That was a joke, what happened was my mom let him suck on a popsicle she was eating.. obviously I'm not feeding him a bowl of chocolate ice cream!
