We are converting from septic to sewer. We are trenching from the house to the street and having a contractor connect from the sewer lateral to a cleanout within the property line. We will then lay the line from that point to the cleanout close top the house. The building inspector says we need to place a plug at the lower cleanout and fill the pipe from above with water to test for leaks. What kind of plug is that? Where can I get it and how is it placed and made water tight? The inspector was less than helpful just saying- get a plumber, but we want to do it ourselves. Hope you can give some insight. You can plug your line by buying a small inflatable play ground ball. Deflate the ball and slide into the pipe and reinflate.

Test plugs come in two flavors. Inflatable and Mechanical, (see images).
You place the inflatable one in the pipe and simply inflate it. The mechanical ones have a wing nut to tighten after it's been placed in the pipe. Good luck with your inspection. Tom
