I am replacing a water shut off valve. The compression valve I purchased says to NOT use plumber's putty however all "how to" pages I check say to always use putty or teflon tape. I am comfused as to what to do.

You don't use either on a compression fitting, (see image) This is a metal to metal connection between the ferrule and the pipe. The threads on the nut do not hold pressure so no sealant's required. Good luck, Tom

Before you start replacing the Shut off valve make sure shut off the water upstream of the S/O Valve, good luck.
