Tractor cut out while driving down a hill in gear. I need a new battery but it holds a charge good enough to get me a couple weeks without new charge. It only cranks over now if I jump the starter terminals. Does it sound to you like a coil problem?

The coil just provides the spark to the spark plugs, it has nothing to do directly with the charging.
