I am single foster mom with one child and we are currently in a month to month program with Section 8 housing. Recently a relative was homeless and asked to live with us. I made an agreement for him to stay with us with the landlord and pay an extra $150.00 for the additional person to stay with us.

I am paying $150 more that what section 8 is requesting directly to the landlord to cover this additional person. Is that OK

No.

You must clear this through section 8 or you could end up losing your section 8 status.

This deal with the landlord is being done under the table.

I don't believe that section 8 would approve of this, do you?

The landlord is not allowed to accept anything extra.
You can charge them for the difference in the utilities and the food
But the landlord is not suppose to get any extra money legally.

You are also suppose to let section 8 know who all is living with you and an approximate time you expect them to be there.

You must contact the Section 8 housing people and advise them of the extra person living in your apt. They may or may not let you continue to live there if there is another person living there with you. Does this person have a job or some sort of income? If they do, then their income will be combined with your income and you might just be out of a place to live as you "make too much" to continue living in Section 8 housing. Don't jeoparidze your living arrangement over paying the landlord $150 a month for this extra person. You are essentially "bribing" the landlord by paying this money as he is more than likely not reporting the extra person or the extra money to Section 8. If the extra person was homeless then there is a higher likelihood that that person would be able to stay if the homelessness can be documented and they don't make much money.

Usually they will let you have somebody live with you as long as they are aware and you do provide their income. They do not allow it (at least not suppose to) if they have a criminal record or drug history.
